Sentry

Error monitoring and performance tracing

Sentry is the first thing I wire into any production app. I use it for error monitoring, distributed tracing, session replay, and release health, with source maps, environment scoping, and alert routing tuned so on-call engineers get signal, not noise.

My take

Why I use Sentry

Sentry tells me what is broken, for whom, on which release, with the breadcrumbs and replay needed to fix it without guessing. The performance and tracing products have closed enough of the gap with Datadog that for most teams under 50 engineers, Sentry alone covers the observability story.

Honest assessment

Strengths & tradeoffs

No tool is perfect. Here's what shines and what to watch for.

Strengths

  • Excellent stack traces with source map support
  • Session replay with privacy controls
  • Performance tracing across frontend and backend
  • Release health and adoption tracking
  • Generous free tier and predictable pricing

Tradeoffs (honestly)

  • Event quotas can spike on noisy errors without sampling rules
  • Self-hosted is operationally heavier than the SaaS
  • Tracing is good but not as deep as Datadog APM at the high end
  • Alert routing UX trails purpose-built tools like PagerDuty

Fit assessment

When to reach for Sentry

Pick the right tool for the job.

Best fits

Production error monitoring on web and mobile

Frontend performance and Core Web Vitals tracking

Release rollout health checks

Session replay for hard-to-reproduce bugs

Not ideal for

Full-stack metrics and log aggregation (pair with Datadog or Grafana Cloud)

Compliance-sensitive workloads requiring data residency Sentry doesn't offer

Air-gapped environments without self-hosting capacity

Common use cases

Error monitoringPerformance tracingSession replayRelease health
